Kishan was undoubtedly in a fit of anger as he walked down the colony road. A young man of about twenty four years, Kishan walked so fast that he almost collided with people as he walked. Then, suddenly he pulled a silver medallion from his pocket and flung it out. “I’ll teach the astrologer a lesson, he wont cheat hereafter”, he said to himself, as he walked.
Only a week before, when Kishan was roaming about the market place, he came across an astrologer selling, what he called, the ‘love medallion’. The astrologer was heard saying, “Wear this medallion and conquer with love, whomever you want”.
Kishan immediately thought of the new girl in the colony. He had an eye on her and was after her for quite sometime, but she hardly seemed to notice him. The astrologer’s love medallion seemed to give Kishan an idea. He immediately bought one and the astrologer gave him the instructions. He asked Kishan to wear it in such a way that the particular person could see it.
Kishan roamed behind the girl, with the medallion around his neck, but there was no change in the situation. He tried it patiently for about three days and finally decided to have it settled with the astrologer. But now to his surprise, he saw that the astrologer was not there, there was someone else in his place. On reaching him, Kishan came to know that the new astrologer was only the elder brother of the one who had sold him the ‘love medallion’
Kishan than shouted at him the way he was cheated by his brother. At this the astrologer calmly replied, “My brother had made a mistake, he gave you the instructions of a different medallion. The love medallion should never be seen by the person you want. Only this way., the power of the love God, would work.
Kishan thought for a while and decided to give a try. He searched for his medallion, which wasn’t there. He immediately rushed to the place he threw, but it wasn’t there too. With a sad face he started walking towards is house. At a little distance, he saw his four year old nephew playing with a ball. On seeing Kishan, the boy shouted, “Uncle”. Kishan who still had the depressed look, carried the boy and continued his walk.
They had walked a little when he heard a woman’s voice, “Excuse me, you look worried; has anything gone wrong?”.
Kishan turned to his side and saw to his surprise, the very girl, he had been after. He couldn’t believe his eyes and could hardly speak. He let her know that she was the cause for his unhappiness. As they walked, he told her the story of the ‘love medallion’; how he had bought one and had it thrown and again searched in vain; all for her sake. The girl replied that it was a pity Kishan believed on medallions and astrologers.
“A woman can never be approached or conquered by a mere medallion” she said, “I spoke to you just because you looked worried”. They talked more about this as they walked, when the girl took leave of Kishan, promising to see him the next day.
Kishan walked with the boy in his arms, and thought of his foolishness in believing the astrologers. He felt ashamed for having believed the astrologer on the second occasion too. He felt indebted to the girl who made him realize his folly. After all the girl spoke to him, just because she was disturbed by his worried face.
Kishan walked a little further when an ice cream vendor came on their way. The boy immediately pulled Kishan’s collar, “Uncle, I want an ice cream”.
“No, I don’t have any money”, Kishan replied.
The little boy joyfully said that he had money with him, He put his little fingers in his small shirt pocket and pulled out a ten paisa coin; and along with the coin came a shining silver medallion.
